People without shadows are real characters. In fact, they are all ASCII characters. :)
For proof you may turn to any number of texts on geography and the origins of words. Here are two examples plucked from wiktionary:
- Nathan Bailey (1756) An Universal Etymological English Dictionary: “ASCII: ... those people who, at certain times of the year, have no shadow at noon; such are the inhabitants of the torrid zone, because they have the sun twice a year vertical to them.”
- Samuel Griswold Goodrich (1840) A Pictorial Geography of the World: “All the inhabitants between the tropics must be ASCII twice a year.”
