Re: Sun sights during an eclipse: "bad limb" calculation

    Hello,

The second part of the question about “3 feet added to the wire” struck me as a bit similar to the distance to the horizon from an eye at a given height.  I’m going to stick my neck out and suggest an apex height of 375.4 feet.

I couldn’t work out any formula for the apex height so decided to try it in reverse, by trying an apex height and seeing what the extra length of wire would be to give that height, then trying different apex heights to home in on an answer of 3 feet (must confess to using Excel’s “goal seek” feature to save too many iterations).  So I’ve gone down the same road as DaveP’s final suggestion of a trial-and-error spreadsheet.

The working is attached, and please shoot it down if there is a flaw in it !

    Thanks

    AdrianF
