Eltanin was in the high 60s when I first started, which for me is high. Now I’m set up for serious observing again, I’m going to have another crack at it next time we have a clear night.
There are a few things I want to do first. I want to measure the Smiths Mk2 field of view and the distance in minutes across its graticule circle. Then I want to try aiming at Rastaban to see if Eltanin becomes more visible. After that I want to try and decide if my difficulty in aiming at very dim stars is something to do with the graticule or a rods v cones thing. Annoyingly, walking back indoors at the end of my shooting session, the sky must have cleared a bit more, because both Eltanin and Rastaban were visible without the sextant, which has 2x magnification. I could also see Deneb (in fact all of Cygnus) way up in the 80s.
Without intending to start a new thread, my schoolboy sniggers were derived from the 7th planet and Beetle Juice. DaveP
