Just to prove air navigators don't always 'shoot from the hip' I thought I'd have a crack at the sums bit. I think I'm on the right track except I got the Moon 18' above the Sun, so maybe there's a small mistake to be corrected. I was hoping applying PinA would cure it, but as PinA is always positive, it made things worse. The Air Almanac deciding air navigators weren't allowed the Moon's GHA and dec six hours either side of the elipse time didn't help. I had to do a lot of interpolating. I'm posting anyway. Perhaps some clever chap like Lars or Robin will correct it. I've already spotted that I worked out height of the Moon for 1800 not 1746, but correcting for that only makes matters worse. DaveP
