    Frank, a point of clarification. You said:

    When I place the reflected image above the direct image, my readings are always OFF THE ARC, not on-arc as you suggest. Thus, for D1, I subtract my off-arc reading from 60?  Doing this would mean in your example, your original reflected above direct image reading was 27.9' OFF (not on-arc as stated in your post) and D1 is  60-27.9=32.1 as you report.

    Perhaps I did not read your example right but the tests I did on the sun this afternoon shoed reflected above direct were always off-the-arc.

    When reflected is below direct, the angle is on-arc.
