Byron; I just read "Nautilus 90 North" by Anderson. None of the books say much about Navigation. It did say how bad the gyro is that far north, they used the magnetic compass for awhile when the 2 gyro,s had problems(fuse), it took 7 hours to restart and have the compass settle down.
After they got SINS on board they still got checks from the magnetic compass and ran a paper DR. as they should. SINS switched to head South after the pole, the Gyro still headed North. I did ride the Nautilus for SQ10, she was old and had many problems.
