I was at work yesterday when I got a call from a friend I hadn't seen in years. I told him he should stop by, and he did. We used to work together a long time ago. He quit and joined the Navy and has apparently been having quite the adventure. During our conversation, he mentioned that he was Quartermaster of his ship. I asked (almost jokingly) if he ever did any sextant sights. "Oh, yes.", he replied, "All the time." He continued, "We also use the stadimeter, alidade and other instruments. Not that we need to, but it's required." We didn't have much time to talk, but we made plans to meet again in a couple of weeks.
I find it humorous that we both ended up doing celestial...for entirely different reasons. I also find it reassuring that our Navy is keeping their skills sharp. :)
