Annotated version of the design, I hope it is clearer. My son suggested I prototype it using a small gauge aluminium extrusion. The prototype does not have to be small enough to use on a plotting sheet, but it would be nice if it fitted on a visualizer for talks. It works in theory, but getting the sliders and springs right might take a few goes. I would welcome any ideas or suggestions to make a prototype.

One slight niggle is that one side has to overlap the others, so I think two normal rods will be on top of the sides and one underneath. Also it seemed easier to use springs in compression as they are external to the triangle. Of course they are neutral when the normals are flush with the sides. They might buckle though as compressed and this would make them a bit non Hookian.
