That is an important point only slightly mitegated by solar chargers. A Kindle will go for weeks on a charge and even without hacking has a java script interpreter in its browser. With the radios off I assume it is backlit displays that use power. You have an ephemeris, sight reduction and can read navigation books. Is there a cheap low power consumption calculator that has the computational muscle to do ephemeris?

Frank you have forgotten one thing about the smartphone
and the battery is dead after one day.
My TI-89 calculator works a year on a set off battery's (4pc AAA standard batterys).
My son uses a TI-84 on the high school every day. He had to change the batterys after 1½ year.
Thats the greatest pro between calculator ans smartphone.Bur everybody can use what he likes.
