Dear All,
You will find herenclosed the original and full extent "TABLE DE POINT MINIATURE" article by French Navy Hydrographer Robert Doniol. This article was scanned and first e-mailed to me a few days ago by Five Star Admiral Guirec Doniol who is the son of M. Robert Doniol.
This article was published in the NAVIGATION Magazine Vol. III N° 10 in April 1955 (just over 60 years ago) by INSTITUT FRANCAIS DE NAVIGATION. Admiral Guirec Doniol specifically obtained from INSTITUT FRANCAIS DE NAVIGATION the kind permission for me to reproduce this article on our NavList Forum.
Thanks be to Admiral Doniol, to INSTITUT FRANCAIS DE NAVIGATION, and of course to late M. Robert Doniol.
I am aware that some of you may not feel comfortable at reading such a long article in their non native langage. Nonetheless, most of it deals about Formulae and numerical examples. And to who-ever has followed with interest our earlier posts on Doniol's Method(s) as initially triggered by Hanno Ix's challenge to our NavList Community in late 2014, the content of this article should make sense.
NavList's significant change to M. Robert Doniol 's original article has been to reprocess formulae with the "Haversine" circular function. This has eventually yielded some benefit and improvement to the safe and error proof use of these Formulae. The Azimut graph is also a very welcome addition to this method.
It might be interesting to note that in the middle of page 184 of this article - showing up as Page 4 of the enclosed ".pdf" document - M. Robert Doniol himself was "thanking in advance future contributors who would improve his method" : “Nous y remercions d’avance les chercheurs qui trouveraient une amélioration à y apporter”.
What our main NavList Contributors did here (Greg, Hanno, Lars, Andrés and Stan among them) is nothing less than what was earlier wished by M. Robert Doniol.
Admiral Guirec Doniol has been following our NavList contributions about his Father's Method with great interest. And if we can definitely thank him again for this article, on the other hand he is very grateful to our NavList Forum for our recent contributions following his Father's footsteps.
Thanks again to you all
