By the way, I neglected to mention that the procedure I described
assumes that the sextant has been set to zero (0d 0.0') on the arc
exactly.
As an alternative, if you have an assistant, you can also request fine
adjustments until the short distance separation of the laser dots is
exactly the same as the long distance separation. At that point the
beams are parallel to less than 0.1' and you can read off the IC just
as if you had done a horizon shot.
