A method was once proposed where establishing that two stars be on the same vertical circle a line plotted through their geographical positions would pass through the observer's zenith - two or more such lines, of course, establishing the observer's position, The trick of course lies in having an instrument sesitive enough to establish the true vertical aboard a ship.

Al,
Otherwise sights taken on a moonlighted horizon can under ideal conditions prove useful.

Hello everyone. A newbie here in the group. I was reading a post about the short time available to shoot stars during the twilight window since you cannot see the horizon after full dark. Is there not a method to calculate position at night by shooting the angle(s) between 2 or more stars without needing the horizon? I cannot find info but remember reading something about that once.
Regards, Al
