I think it’s just a shade to stop the sun from flashing you before you get your eye on the telescope when taking sun altitudes with an artificial horizon. I taped a piece of cardboard on my MS-633 and found it worked very well for that purpose.

Looking at various Tamaya sextants over the years, I notice that the MS-733 Spica used to include a metal shade above the horizon mirror prior to the 1980's... it still appears on the MS-L series.
The manuals do not address this item, can anyone share any details on correct description and function of this part?
