Other than index error checks or using an artificial horizon, I don’t think it would be that useful. Maybe if you were in the habit of not pre-setting your sextant and working the sun down to the horizon, you might get a flash now and then, but perhaps encouraging poor technique isn’t the selling feature they thought it was.

Interesting that it does not seem to appear on current sextant offerings from Celestaire, C&P etc. but used to be included on the various Tamaya models, and older "Tamaya-likes" including Simex MK-I (but not MK-II, MK-III or Mariner models), Ogawa Seiki, Oaklet, Undator, Tama Sokki....
