Found the following reference in Heath's "My Modern Sextant" (1937), which refers to this item as a "Definition Shade" or "Ray Shade":
"... the large O.G. (Object Glass) of the Star Telescope is likely to pick up rays of sunlight, forming a glare or dazzling point of light which is inimical to good observations. This danger is guarded against in the best sextants by suitable means, e.g. the "Hezanith" Definition Shade and the "Hezzanith" Ray-Shade which prevent the sun rays reaching the O.G. directly."
