Doug,
1) $500 is far too much to pay for a second hand Tamaya unless it comes with some sort of money back guarantee. If you lurk on e-bay, you should eventually find one for rather less.
2) They are generally of good quality, but see "Blunders" at www.sextantbook.com
3) The Simex sextants, sometimes described as "the poor man's Tamaya", were actually made by Tamaya for sale in the US in the 1970's by a school of navigation in Santa Barbara, so if you buy a Simex, you are getting a Tamaya.
