Steve,
I bought a pair of binocluars that had a screw hole tripod mount and a tripod for my grandchildren. We would look at birds, etc during the day but I would tell them stories about the moon and stars to get them ready for night. Once darkness came I remember the magic of them seeing the moon close up or pointing out the many, many stars in the Seven Sisters.
Good thing about binoculars is they are multi-use and rugged.
