    I once saw a drawing of a compass for an airplane - there was all the machnery for compensation of fluid effects from different temperatures and pressures.

    Tony.  The older flat aircraft magnetic compasses tended to have a concertina-like brass bottom to the bowl to allow the fluid to expand and contract.  The vertical dashboard types often have a neoprene film sandwiched between the case and a domed rear plate.  DaveP
