Hi David,
That is a brilliant idea of swapping the quartz crystals (which are usually too small, to have any markings on them).
My prediction is:
By swapping the crystals, you will turn the 4 handed clock into a tide clock (with the normal "Tide hand" now being too slow per day due to its fixed gearing). The other "tide clock" will be turned into a standard 12 hour clock.
I have (very carefully) cut open an old watch crystal and yes it did look like (under a microscope) just like this image.
The quartz crystals are really quite robust, however care should be taken to earth yourself (through a 1 Megohm resistor on a wrist band) to avoid any electrostatic damage to the clock CMOS digital circuitry when soldering!
