I enjoy reading accounts of sea voyaging, especially under sail, and have recently come across two books by H C de Mierre, "The Long Voyage", about 3 years of his apprenticeship in 1905-08, published 1963, and "Clipper Ships to Ocean Greyhounds", about his further years at sea. The earlier volume did most for me, and I attach a short passage which gives a taste of the style, and the nautical precision, with which it's written. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is mine. There's no connection between this and a somewhat-squalid argument I seem to be having at the moment with Frank Reed, about disbelieving another passage by the same author.
