Theodolites were use extensively in North Africa by the British
Long Range Desert Group. Celestial Navigation was about the
only way to keep from getting lost in the Western Desert.
The are set up on a tripod and Noon sights are taken just worked
out just like at sea with a sextant. I read a book on the LRDG
by someone named Shaw Kenedy or something.
Most of the native inhabitants stick close to the Mediterranean
coast line. The interior in some places is just like being at
sea. Mater of fact, there is a movie called "The Sea of Sand"
that profiles the "adventures of the LRDG".
