I saw a film of this on tv news and their boat had intact rigging and sails!  My conclusion: no backup sat nav, no knowledge of celestial; clueless and lucky to be rescued.   Adrift, 76 Days Lost at Sea a great book by a fellow who ended up in his emergency life raft off Spain with minimal nav instruments and managed to make it to the West Indies: not clueless.

I've read the news articles with interest.

It appears, from my readings, that they lost the ability to provide thrust to the boat.  Loss of motor power.  Loss of sail power.  They were essentially adrift in the Pacific.

We can assume that no motor power resulted in loss of electricity and thus, no radio.  Why they chose to sail the biggest ocean in the world without at least one EPIRB is beyond me.

I have not read that they were, or were not aware, of their position.  Even if they were aware of their position, there was precious little they could do about it.  So "lost at sea" should have read "powerless at sea".  There is a difference.
