One obsolete electronic sytem which could give you a "rough" fix off Dover in Fog was the old low frequency RDF, long since deceased. However, last year I managed to pick up with my still functional 1980s RDF, a few Non Directional Beacons (NDBs) still broadcasting from airfields in my sailing area,i.e. Scillies, Caldrose, Newquay, Brest, and a Long Wave radio station in Ireland. I managed a few 3 body "fixes" to within a mile or so on land, but illness beached me last summer, so I was hoping to try it out at sea this coming season. However, I have heard the sad news that most airfield NDBs are or soon will be, closing down, presumably permanently. Maybe I'll stick a long wave (say about 250KHz) transmitter on my house roof. Should give me a bearing home!
Anyone yet thought of ways to make a phone app that could find position just from a photograph of the night sky if you (and the phone) has correct GMT? Would that be theoretically possible?
These nightmare "bad guys" scenarios I don't really worry about. Fog, storms, being hit by ships, yes.
For me, worse than GPS jamming would be loss of the Navlist soul food via navlist email! Without my daily "fix" of Navlist discussions from you guys, I surely would be lost! May the Bad Guys not hack our Navlist please!
Best wishes
Francis
