Re: Time and Longitude by Jupiter's moons

    Hi Steve,

Astron has a small "phase image" diagram that I included to show the phase and visual orientation of the Moon from the assumed position and subject UT. I subsequently extended it for Mercury, Venus and Mars. Later, in an idle spell and just for interest, with no navigational intent, I added Saturn (to show visual ring aspect) and Jupiter to show her major satellite positions. I used Meeus' Second edition chapters 44 and 45 for the latter two. The coding of file Jupiter.js may help with your new found interest - it can be accessed through links in the user notes.

Eclipses and occultations are not shown. It is, of course, no substitute for big brother Stellarium! I attach a comparison screenshot for 0N 0W at 2024.12.05 at 00:00:00.

Good luck with your project - I hope you have a good telescope!

    Bill
