In my experience as a deck officer in UK merchant ships during the 60s and early 70s 'official' zone time was not kept.  Clocks were advanced or retarded at midnight, usually in one hour increments so as to keep the following day's lunchtime conveniently close to the middle of the day.  The three night watches from 2000 to 0800  were then informally shortened or extended by 20 minutes to keep the watchkeepers happy.
