Frank thaks for the hint about Google searches!!!!

I have  learned that Towson was not a navigator but in the mid 1800s he published a set of tables for calculating composit great circle sailings. Steam ships were coming into use so there was a growing iinterest in great circles tracks.

I have found an explanation of the tables in the Admiralty Manual of Navigation 1938 Vol 3. There is also a mention of Towson in Bowditch 1958. Maybe I should have  checked these books before asking online.

Now to find a pdf or better still a paper copy. I found a pdf version but the site  required me to register. I suppose I can register under the name Towson.............
