John, "Apache Runner", wrote "I'm trying to obtain some papers that dispute the common citations on the Viking "sun compass". In particular in the archives, Dr. Koberer cites an article by Eva Taylor and William May in Journal of the Institute of Navigation, Vol 7 (1954), 78-81. I can't find this article, and the Journal has an online table of contents. I cannot find Eva Taylor in the archives, and 1954 corresponds to Volume 4, not Vol 7 (which corresponds to 1960, roughly). Any help?" I think perhaps John is looking into the wrong Journal: the US journal "Navigation", rather than the British "Journal of Navigation", of the Royal Institute of Navigation, where he will find it. But to save him the trouble, I attach a copy of those pages. Please note, if making any further use of those pages, that they are copyright to the RIN, who are rather broadminded about such matters. If he has any further interest, he might like to know of an article about this device (if device it is, which I doubt) in the latest Bulletin (No 101) of the Scientific Instrument Society, pages 39 - 43, "The Viking Sun Compass", by Mike Cowham, who is clearly a devotee of the instrument theory.
