    One more vote for degrees & minutes on the scales.

    I think the problem with the pictured degrees-minutes scale is that it has 4 different heights of lines, for the 5's, 10's, 30's, and degrees. I don't think the 5's and 10's need to be distinguished from each other-- if they were the same height, it would still be easy to tell what they represent because five in a row (for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25) look very different from 2 in a row (such as appear after 20 degrees in the picture). And flattening these out would make the whole scale more readable, imho. Try it with white-out on a paper - copy of the picture!
