This reminds me of discussions in the Yahoo slide rule group on the Ultralog, "the most advanced general engineering slide rule ever produced." Its original designer died, but somebody else took over. A major issue was what manufacturing technology to employ. However, there has been no news for a long time, so I'm not sure if the project is still alive. http://www.david108.com/ultralog/ultralog.htm It may be worthwhile to contact the current designer, or even browse the Yahoo message archive. Last I knew, you had to join the group to get access, but that was free.
