I agree with Tony,
KISS is my moto with homemade kit like this. My very accurate cylindrical rules use prefabricated, precison built plastic or aluminium pipes available for virtually zero cost as off cuts + carefully placed and glued photo paper prints of the scales using ordinary cheap dot printers. Anyone is welcome to build details.
My plan for your straight rule is virtually identical to Tony's. It will probably not happen till mid winter, but watch this space. Should only take a couple of days to make. Confident it will work fine.
