The problem with having the tri-color plus steaming light lit is it shows to another boat as Red over White. (or Green over White). That is a different thing than what you are. I've also seen people with tri-colors run with their tri-color and running lights. Red over Red. ...and under power with tri-color, steaming and running lights. Red over White over Red. Oh, and from astern you get white over white. I run with proper lights at night but keep a sail up. When in doubt, I get out my flashlight (torch) and shine it on my sails. Sort of the puffer fish defense mechanism.
