Frank,

     Thanks for your analysis. I will compare horizontal sextant
angles with the Trombone Kamal for a baseline check.

That's right in line with observational experiments that I've done (and seen 
done) with cross-staffs, which is what you've got there. So that's looking 
very reasonable. I doubt you could get much better in terms of statistical 
spread without some means of looking in two directions simultaneously; for 
example via the double reflection principle of the sextant.
