I mentioned the option of getting a list of estimated altitudes. Here's a list for tonight (from my web app) for a location near Racine, Wisconsin. Use these altitudes, rounded to the nearest degree, to preset your sextant. The time is set for early twilight with the Sun 6° below the horizon. You may want to make another list for 30 minutes later, or you can just remember that stars climb on the eastern side of the sky and descend on the west, with relatively little change near the meridian.
