Remember ‘Primum non nocere’. See if you and get your Kollsman to work as is before trying anything else. Then you know where you’re starting from. To play with the bubble you need to know that it lives down a little hole in the 3 O’ Clock position at the outer edge of the view through the eyepiece. It’s alongside the righthand edge of the fine black horizontal hairline you can see in your photograph. You can adjust the size of the bubble by turning the top right-hand knob which says “Increase Bubble”. Proceed as follows:
1. Sit the sextant on a widow ledge or similar looking outdoors.
2. Look through the eyepiece and find the black horizontal hairline.
3. Tilt the sextant up to 45 degrees left until the bubble lies against the right-hand edge of the black horizontal hairline.
4. Move the bubble adjusting knob to alter the size of the bubble. If the bubble hasn’t been adjusted for a while, you might need to move the knob backwards and forwards a couple of times and maybe give a slight cough to wake it up. I find it also helps if you whisper encouragement by telling it what a beautiful bubble it is, but you would appreciate it if it were just a little bit smaller or larger. DaveP
