Hello. This is my first post and results from a search for information on Troughton and Simms Sextants. I am optomistic that I am in the right place. The sextant shown in the attached images has been in my family for many years, certainly since the 1940s and I am keen to understand more of its history. My understanding is that it is a diamond frame sextant which seem to be less common than the double frame sextants and that the keystone style case probably dates from 1860 or earlier. Despite a close examination of the sextant I am unable to find a serial number. Can anybody suggest where it would be marked? I have no knowledge of the original owner, William Wilson, but know that I am related to a Captain who sailed from Scotland in the late 1800s. It is nice to think that he might have been the second or later owner of this sextant. I am keen to date the instrument accurately if anyone can provide me with any guidance.
