Dave Walden wrote, about a suitable Excel function for fitting polynomials "Using excel 2000, this works!", and showed the LINEST function being used to do exactly that job. Thanks, Dave, that certainly answers my question, and also provides a useful example of how to use that function. But why, I wonder, does Excel's Help file describe that function so differently, as a way of fitting to one or more variables that all make a LINEAR contribution to the result? I can find no reference, in Excel 2000's Help, to any way of using LINEST on quadratic and higher terms. And I'm trying to see how you restrict LINEST to fit a polynomial up to a certain order. Whether, that is, you ask for a linear fit, a quadratic fit, a cubic fit, and so on. What specifies that, in your spreadsheet?| George. contact George Huxtable, at george@hux.me.uk or at +44 1865 820222 (from UK, 01865 820222) or at 1 Sandy Lane, Southmoor, Abingdon, Oxon OX13 5HX, UK. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ NavList message boards: www.fer3.com/arc Or post by email to: NavList@fer3.com To , email NavList+@fer3.com -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
