The following document in 3 very large Adobe Acrobat PDF files is available online: Air Navigation 15 March 1983 Reprinted 1 Dec 1989 with Changes 1 and 2 included Departments of the [US] Air Force and the Navy AFM 51-40 Chapters include Maps, Charts, Mission Planning, Dead Reckoning, Lines of Position, Radio, Radar, Time, Celestial Concepts, Computing Altitude and True Azimuth, Celestial Precomputation, Plotting and Interpreting Celestial LOPs, Special Celestial Techniques, Star Identification, Sextants and Errors of Observation, Grid, Overwater Aids (PLOP and LORAN), Advanced Navigation Systems, Low Level Navigation, Aerial Delivery and Air Refueling, Weather Station Services, Formulas and Conversions. The download site is at: http://www.wpafb.af.mil/cpdc/pubs/AF/manual.html The files are 21.2 MB, 20.1 MB, and 22.3 MB in size! If you do not have a Cable Modem or DSL or better connection, they may not be worth downloading. I have not inspected them in too much detail yet. They are so large because they are scanned from the originals, not generated via Adobe Acrobat, so some of the pages are fuzzy. Nevertheless, it may be another free source of interesting information about celestial navigation. There are also many other US Air Force publications available at: http://www.wpafb.af.mil/cpdc/pubs/AF/index.html including US survival manuals (4 large scanned PDFs) at: http://www.wpafb.af.mil/cpdc/pubs/AF/00064series.html Dan
