In my original post, I did not say "paper good, electronics bad." I said one should combine the two to ensure prudent seamanship. Let's call it the belts-and-suspenders philosophy.
A friend of mine, a retired U.S. Navy captain, told me of his ship's loss of electric power generation in the middle of a Pacific Ocean crossing. All the electronic navigation (and other) equipment went dark. They depended on dead
reckoning and paper charts for many hours until power could be restored. Fortunately, the ship was mid-ocean. Such a failure near a coastline or approaching a port would have been more troublesome.
