    Here's a photo from this afternoon at Stonington Point, southeast from Mystic Seaport, where some of you have taken sextant sights with me. The flag is at half-staff to honor a 25-year-old sonar tech from Connecticut who died in the collision aboard USS Fitzgerald. If you're interested, you can read about him here.

    We're looking toward the southeast in this photo. In the middle of the frame, you can see the sea horizon. If you travel in that direction and sail for as long as you can, on the straightest possible path, a great circle on the globe, you will pass between Africa and South America without hitting any land. Then you will pass north of Antarctica and into the Indian Ocean, and after travelling more than halfway around the Earth, through the antipodes of Stonington still without touching any dry land, you will finally reach the southwest coast of Australia.
