Re: USS Fitzgerald collision with container ship

    John:

One of last night's network TV news broadcasts showed the AIS track of the two ships.  The Fitzgerald was holding a steady course to the northwest.

The container ship approached the Fitzgerald from the WSW, ie, almost perpendicular to the Fitz's port side.   As the burdened vessel, it turned to the south (its starboard) and passed behind the Fitzgerald.   So far, so good.

But the AIS track shows the container ship then doing almost a 180 degree turn to port, ending up traveling to the west and aiming itself at the Fitz's starboard side where the collision then occurred.

Does anybody know what other ships were around the USS Fitzgerald?  A lot of talk on Yahoo that the destroyer was more manuverable so should have taken action - but -
If I am driving a sports car on I-5 in LA and an 18-wheeler crosses into my lane there is not much I can do.  Did other ships around prevent wild manuvers?
