An interesting explanation, Frank. But it seems both this and others hinge on which way the Fitzgerald was sailing. The TV news report I saw said it was sailing northwest. But your idea (which makes a LOT of sense) would have it sailing southeast. Given no AIS track for the Fitzgerald, has its direction been established??
