Geoffrey,
Attached is a picture of the HMS Dauntless' bridge (clearly showing quite a few windows). Perhaps you are confusing the "operations room" (a place where radar, sonar and other information is gathered and analyzed [picture also attached]) with the bridge?
I can't imagine any ship being built without any windows on the bridge.
