Dear all,
just a simple observation: When my wife and I were sailing in the Baltic on Calypso (46 ft) this summer we listened to channel 16 as is mandatory, Close to traffic separation zones (there is quite a lot of big ship traffic in the Baltic) and bends in the deep water lanes we usually heard conversations between vessels close to each other that informed about what they were intending to do next. I assume that they were monitoring each other on AIS (as we were) and saw the opponent*s course and speed. That only works if the active AIS is turned on, of course. It may also work with Radar ARPA (we only have MARPA and I haven't figured out how to get it to work properly) but IMH(small boat)O not using active AIS and not communicating with other ships (if that was the case) is a grave ommission that should cost the skipper or other responsible person his license.
