U.S. Defense Mapping Agency Technical Manual 8358.2, "The Universal Grids," is an authoritative source for the UTM formulas. The publication is available as a 2.8 MB PDF and may be downloaded here: http://earth-info.nima.mil/GandG/pb.html It is item no. 4 on the list. Some of the other pubs there are pretty interesting too. With the document in hand, be sure to read ahead to determine which terms will be needed. For example, the "T17" and higher terms need not be computed if you only want to convert UTM to lat/lon and vice versa. The "Explanatory Supplement to the Astronomical Almanac" also has the formulas, in a different format as I recall. Several years ago I tried to code up a routine based on that book, but never got it to work. Later someone told me the book had a misprint. The need for the routine evaporated, so I never did try the DMA pub's formulas.
