most of the MHR1's were produced near the end of the war, ostensibly to keep workers occupied on "strategically important equipment" but in fact to keep them from being sent to the Eastern front.
My arguments were that the HR's were indeed for the U-boats but that all other ships (weather ships, supply ships etc) would have merchant navy crew who knew the F-Tafel and surely in the first half of the war there were not enough HR's for these less strategic ships.
I am in no way pretending to be an expert on German (or any other) naval practices, I am merely a fly-guy and a slide rule expert.
