Some-what related: I just finished reading the excellent book “The
Battle of the Atlantic” by Andrew Williams. This book gives an excellent view of
both sides of the U-Boat war at sea. One paragraph really struck me
about the courage and skill of the long range bombers that were used early- on
in an attempt to protect the convoys as they approached the middle ocean gap
. Think about this..... these relatively novice flyers with their
navigators would fly 5- 6 hours , find the convoy via CN, circle the
convoy for 5 or more hours, then return home and find their base.
Impressive. Usually only one or two planes went out per convoy.
Also , letters written by Anne Morrow Lindberg indicate she
became skilled with CN. She found it “ .....amazing that one could
determine location with a sextant and adding and subtracting a few
numbers.....”. I assume she was using Weems 1927 methods or something slightly
later . This was in the late 1920s /early 1930s.
