Thanks to Doug Royer for bringing to my attention (and the list's) chapter 7 of Henning Umland's "Guide to Celestial Navigation. And thanks to Bill Arden for providing a web address "www.celestialnavigation.net" which gives a pointer to that guide and much, much, more. A real mine of information! But I can now give an address from which you can download, free, the complete guide. This is http://home.t-online.de/home/h.umland/page2.htm I've downloaded and printed it out (it's in pdf format). I haven't done more than scan through it yet, but it's obviously very thorough and well-explained. Umling doesn't shy away from using maths, glad to say. Both Bruce Stark and I disagree with the thrust of Umland's lunar method in chapter 7, as we have stated to this list, but otherwise I think it could be a valuable resource for information about astro-nav. It will certainly repay a detailed study.
