> Submarine Bells, J.B. Millet (The Marine Engineer & Naval Architect, > July 1907) > https://archive.org/details/marineengineer29londuoft/page/431/mode/1up?view=theater Another submarine bell article by the same author goes into more detail on the difficult experimentation needed to develop the technology. J.B. Millet, "Submarine Signaling by Means of Sound," Engineering News, 1906 July 12, p. 38 https://archive.org/details/mdu-043094/page/38/mode/1up?view=theater He says quarter point accuracy is possible by rapidly switching between left and right microphones and listening for equal signal. I wonder if anyone thought of stereophonic listening. The shipboard device has two receivers, but that's to allow two people to share the monophonic sound. Elisha Grey, mentioned in the article, may be most famous for losing a telephone patent race by a few hours to Bell. -- Paul Hirose sofajpl.com
