Robert-
I was told that the airlines "might" be worried about the door hitting an
inbound rescuer, or puncturing a wing, but of course that's all speculation
since the airlines don't comment on these things. Personally, after watching 200
people trying to block the aisle and fit their pushcart into the overhead bin
(usually ignoring the voice in the intercom telling them to put it in wheels
down the long way)...I'd rather sit next to the door, and if there's a rescuer
coming, he'll have to be damn fast to get there while there's still a door in
sight.<G> If the door costs $50,000, that's still just a ha'penny extra to add
on each of the next ten million tickets to replace it. The airlines can easily
afford that compared with the $2.3m in wereguild that they pay for each
passenger they kill. If chucking the door saves one life...Can I bill them for
the $2,250,000 it saves? (And shouldn't I have a union card before I operate the
door, or any part of the aircraft?<G>)
