Gary,
I have observed the gender-based pattern you describe between my wife and myself. I have a mental grid I use to visualize where I am, while my wife definitely navigates from one landmark to the next. I always have a pretty clear idea of where north is...while for my wife, compass coordinates are irrelevant.
